Its an intriguing premise that was used effectively on the big screen in 1944s It Happened Tomorrow. But his luck changes when he receives a newspaper---with tomorrows news.Im not going to put it back in the mail, because I really dont know if they would get it, he said.Theres a sense among Arizona voters, newly adjusting to living in a swing state that regularly sees visits both virtual and in person from national campaigns: Their votes matter.
The number of people who have voted so far this year outpaces the election four years ago, Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs said Wednesday. Hobbs said she didnt have a figure for how many people had voted so far this year. More than they had at this point in 2016, Hobbs said during a media call on Zoom. More than 3 million ballots were sent out across the state to people who are on the Permanent Early Voting List, representing about 75 of voters who are registered, she said. Her office said about 22,000 ballots have been received by the 13 counties that use the state election system, but Maricopa and Pima County have their own systems and are not included in that total. Maricopa County elections are busy, with a high number of people calling the Election Departments call center for information and voting early so far. We are seeing across-the-board interest and participation, said Maricopa County Elections Department spokeswoman Megan Gilbertson. As of around noon Wednesday, Maricopa County had processed about 129,000 ballots since Oct. The tally of ballots processed changes by the second, Gilbertson said, as many more have been dropped off but have yet to get processed by the countys election staff. For example, the county knows that it got about 100,000 ballots in the mail on Wednesday, but those arent included in the 129,000 figure, Gilbertson said. The total ballots processed include people who mailed in their ballot, dropped a ballot off at a vote center or dropbox, and cast a ballot in person. Processing means verifying signatures and doing everything else to get the ballot ready to be tabulated the county will start the counting of votes on Oct. Gilbertson said. As of Tuesday, about 12,000 voters had cast their ballots in person, Gilbertson said. As for the approximately 117,000 other ballots processed by elections officials, the county isnt able to say at this time whether they were sent in the mail or dropped off at a vote center or dropbox. Current dropbox options for voters include inside city or town clerks offices or outside of the countys election headquarters in downtown Phoenix. More drop boxes will open soon outside of stadiums and sports facilities across the county. ![]() ARIZONA 2020 BALLOT: Voters guide for Nov. Voter Sidney Sneed said he received his ballot in the mail Wednesday and will drop it off early Thursday morning. He said it took him a few hours to complete his ballot because he wanted to thoroughly research every candidate from the president down to local judges. Sneed, who is an independent, said he has been voting since the Nixon era and this was his first time voting entirely for Democrats. This election has been especially important to him as some of his key issues include rights for immigrants and the LGBTQ community. Sneed said he has always voted by mail since moving to Arizona 20 years ago, but cited concerns about whether his ballot would properly arrive in time and be counted.
